Watch Out, the Zombies are Coming

Unturned is yet another game that uses zombies as its theme. This classic survival game challenges players to survive for as long as they can. Read on to discover if Unturned is diverse enough to make it worth checking out.

The focus of Unturned is very different to most zombie games. Instead of having to run around trying to kill as many zombies as possible before they get eaten, players have to work on staying safe and fortifying their hideout. This can be rather tricky at times and players really have to use all the resources at their disposal to make sure that they stay safe and sound. These are not your typical zombies and have their own problem solving abilities that make them a force to be reckoned with.

The variety of the number of tasks that players are presented with also helps to keep the game interesting. In addition to building their fortress, gamers will have to forage for food, negotiate with other people and learn how to live off the land until the hungry zombies finally give up their roaming.

There is a large game world for players to explore and lots of things to find and use. The graphics leave a lot to be desired, however, and various elements are often represented by bright blogs of colour. In fact, it feels like the art department behind the game was run by a team of children. To be fair, the game was created and developed by a sixteen-year-old, which is an amazing accomplishment in itself, but gamers may still feel that the game needs polishing a little.

The classic elements of a zombie game are well represented in Unturned. There are buckets of blood and the zombies pose a real threat rather than simply being mindless. The food and other treasures scattered throughout the game are fairly easy to find, which means that players don’t have to waste a lot of time running aimlessly to simply be rewarded with a rotten piece of fruit. The difficultly level and pacing of the game seem to be just about right and there is plenty here to get gamers hooked.

Younger players and people who have a bit of a short attention span are sure to like the fact that they will be able to get into the game straight away. The rewards come in thick and fast and there is a certain sense of achievement in outwitting the zombies and managing to avoid them before you are spotted. With their chunky and colourful graphics, the zombies simply are not as terrifying as they could be, although again, this could be a bonus for younger players.

Exploring the military bases, towns and other constructions in the gaming world can be a lot of fun. You have to constantly remember to keep an eye open for the zombies, as they tend to pop up when you least expect them. Being bold enough to go out and get what you want while also having the sense not to draw to much attention to yourself can be a thin line with death being the consequence of getting it wrong.

If you are a fan of classic zombie games, get ready for something different with Unturned. The game presents lots of challenges and varied game play that may keep players coming back for more. However, the basic and overly bright graphics may turn off some gamers and make the game feel childish rather than frightening.

  • Very basic graphics

Unturned is an F2P game that blends survival and FPS mechanics in a Minecraft-like world.

Unturned is first and foremost a survival game. You begin your adventure stranded in the wilderness with no resources save your wits. The goal of such games is to bootstrap yourself until you can not only survive your environment but master it and become the hunter rather than the prey.

Unturned can be played in an isolated, single-player environment. It also supports multiplayer, and there are cooperative, player versus player, and team versus team servers available. The game is free to play, and that’s true online regardless of what server type you opt for.

The map is massive and comprises many different biomes for you to explore and survive. Zombies are everywhere, and you have to avoid them and run from them until you’ve created or found the means to dispatch them. The crafting system is deep. At first, you’ll be fending off zombies with a stick, but you’ll eventually have powerful hand cannons, scoped sniper rifles, and even vehicles that let you get from point A to point B much faster than you could ever walk.

Movement feels fluid and is a strong point of the game. Using your keyboard and mouse, you can walk, sprint, crawl, kneel, jump and more. Using the mouse to aim or navigate is very smooth, and tapping a mouse button to fire a gun or swing a club is very fluid. Combat is also rewarding. Being chased down by a relentless zombie can be frustrating, but having the control to turn and fire accurately is satisfying.

Unturned is like a cross between Minecraft and DayZ. Some AI adversaries beyond just zombies would be nice, but the game works quite well overall and has a great aesthetic. If there’s an issue with Unturned, it’s that interacting with items can be a bit finicky. You can overlook it most of the time, but it can be a big problem when you’re in a panic and just have to snatch that gun to survive.

  • Free to play
